HLabX Programme

Starting to get serious on this.... Nope, actually we are damn serious about this for years! Let's kickass! After the laaasst HackteriaLab (a larger version of) in Yogyakarta five years ago, we are facing our heads up towards HackteriaLab in Taiwan with peripheric activities, residencies and labs all over many places before and after.

Description

HLabX is a concentrated gathering of people working transdisciplinary who are interested in creative biological fields and any other areas which intrigue the critical interaction across art and science. In the past, Hackteria has been organising both carefully planned and/or spontaneous activities. The HackteriaLabs has been providing vessels which create international networks and potential collaboration to emerge and flourish. HackteriaLab's main focus always has been on the process of interaction between creative people, between professionals and amateurs, providing a stimulant for collaborative processes; for developing new ideas which connect and embrace the cultural diversities of the participants; and to address societal challenges through experiments with DIWO Culture, with material, technique, and nature through hands-on tinkering, curiosity driven research and never ending inquisitiveness. After the last large-scale HackteriaLab 2014 - Yogyakarta, we are looking forward to host this HLabX Programme involving a series of related events, gatherings, residencies, temporary labs and it's presentations in 2019-2020 in Taiwan, Yogyakarta, Okinawa, Switzerland and beyond. We want to connect the old and new networks which we have created throughout our activities during the past 10 years.

Pre-Phase Workshops / Presentations

During the pre-phase we want to hold public workshops to introduce our practice and methodologies at the interface of biohacking, art and DIWO (Do It With Others). These workshops are planned for early October onwards and during the stay of the residence artists.

HLab X - Taiwan

Tentative Dates: (not so sure anymore)... first focusing on the network, residencies and fellows programme, then bringing the topics and people together for Taiwan Lab.

At the heart of the HackteriaLab is a 10-day retreat / camp, as a collaborative temporary research laboratory for dealing with ecology, environment, nature and fusion with artistic practice of media art and the interface of art and science. The retreat into a new place and the taking out of participants from their everyday practice serves to create an experimental place to test new ideas, collaborations, prototypes, performances in a local context.

Impressions from the past

Wormolution - Hackteria Temporary Autonomous Laboratory at 1000 Ecologies, Geneva

Spanduk Hackteria web.jpg

Keywords: Worms, Soil, Circular Economies, Plastics, Textiles, Metabolism, HLabX, Environment-culture, Lasers, Ecology and Life Sciences, Relational Biosphere

Hackteria coordinated a Temporary Autonomous Laboratory during the early phase of “1000 Ecologies” inviting international researchers, artists and entrepreneurs as participants. The lab as a temporary construction should allow researchers from the fields of biology and engineering to collaborate with artists and so create links between the “two cultures”, the human sciences and the arts. On the topic of “Wormolution” participants explored the territory between plastic as the abundant material of our society and the natural metabolisms and processes in nature.

HackteriaLab 2014 - Yogyakarta

HackteriaLab 2014 was held in April 2014, in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A number of smaller events, workshops, residencies and exhibitions predated the main collaborative lab-phase. It was the fourth edition of an intensive two-week transdisciplinary collaboration amongst international and local artists, hackers, activists, scientists, and designers. HackteriaLab 2014 expanded on ideas and methodologies about BioArt, DIY biology, Appropriate Technology, ArtScience and BioHacking, developed during the previous versions of HackteriaLab 2011 - Romainmotier and HackteriaLab 2010 - Dock18/Zürich in Switzerland and HackteriaLab_2013_-_Bangalore in India.

Within the framework of "Hackteria | Open Source Biological Art", the HackteriaLab immersive format plays a key role in experimentation and the development of new models for knowledge sharing and collaboration building, in the emergent artistic practices related to bio- and nanotechnology and science in general.

HackteriaLab, our version of a production workshop, creates a melting pot of the practices of art and science, of culture and environment. It aims to broaden the intercultural knowledge exchange and realizes this know-how through workshops, participatory prototype exhibitions and online wiki documentations.

HackteriaLab 2014 invited international artists and scientists to collaborate with local communities, which have been intensively working with specific local social and ecological issues in Yogyakarta.

Synopsis

Citizen science has long contributed to the health of local communities by making people aware of their environment in the form of oral histories and traditional wisdom. Recently, the effort to democratize science created opportunities for innovation and a model for public participation in science. These movements rippled into many things such as a kind of revival of traditional knowledge, influential policy forces, changes in how we produce and share knowledge into an iterative and collective process. Yogyakarta, Indonesia, has been one of the most active hubs in this movement.

HackteriaLab 2014 – Yogyakakarta is a two-weeks making-oriented gathering of researchers, artists, scientists, academicians, hackers and whatevers in Yogyakarta. It was hosted by LIFEPATCH - citizen initiative in art, science and technology and co-organized together with HACKTERIA | Open Source Biological Art in collaboration with various regional partners. As a web and community platform, Hackteria tries to encourage scientists, hackers and artists to collaborate and combine their expertise, write critical and theoretical reflections, share simple instructions to work with life science technologies and cooperate on the organization of workshops, festival and meetings.

What will they be making and for who? Anything along their own practices within the setting of the three ecological nodes which basically are on going projects that are open for people’s participation. They are: Biorecovery of volcanic soil that is run by the Microbiology Department (Agricultural Faculty of Gadjah Mada University); biodiversity conservation in Wonosadi Forest that is run by the Green Tech Community; and environmental monitoring of the rivers in Yogyakarta that is run by Lifepatch.

Produced and directed by X-Code films, this documentary was made during the two weeks of HackteriaLab 2014 – Yogyakarta. It offers you a glimpse of (almost) everything that happens and documents the participants wish list for future collaborations and works.

  • ) Gotong-royong is an Indonesian philosophy on getting things done collectively. As Indonesianist anthropologist Clifford Geertz puts it, “An enormous inventory of highly specific and often quite intricate institutions for effecting the cooperation in work, politics, and personal relations alike, vaguely gathered under culturally charged and fairly well indefinable value-images--rukun ("mutual adjustment"), gotong royong ("joint bearing of burdens"), tolong-menolong ("reciprocal assistance")--governs social interaction with a force as sovereign as it is subdued.”

TAM - Tribe Against Machine

Our partner Shih-Wei Chieh and a team of collaborators organized camps in Taiwan 2017 and 2018, connecting e-textile communities and hackers to local tribal knowledge of weaving and other textile methods of the Ayatal tribes.

Fu-Zhi (服誌) program is the core spirit of the event and will serve as a concrete symbol reshaped after the transformation of traditional culture through contemporary technologies, “Fu-Zhi” is a conceptual project to produce magazines speak for tribe culture but with physical wearable form. With this project and e-Textile workshops, Shih Wei Chieh, the initiator of this event, attempts to bring artists, the new Atayal generation, and all other workshop participators together in hopes of discovering the new coordinate for cultural heritage preservation. Fu-Zhi, which will be created after the workshop, using traditional textile techniques and smart materials, will be able to transform cultural heritage archival into IoT (Internet of Things) objects, wearables, to achieve its main purpose of becoming a digitized physical global but private underground platform, an ethnic internet for a discrete, un-unified group of human cultures: “Tribes”.
