Application to NanoARTS Matchmaking event by Hackteria ZET and friends
Motivation to host and consult a collaborative project - by Marc Dusseiller / Hackteria ZET
I have been developing a large network and expertise over the last decade on producing and curating transdisciplinary projects at the interface of DIY culture (do-it-yourself) and the field of art / science collaborations. The Global Hackteria Network has been actively promoting an Open Source culture in such projects, and has established a large knowledge base online for projects to be documented, discussed and shared. Since 2020 we started a new iniative Hackteria ZET – Zentrum für Experimentelle Transdisziplinarität and have set up a space «Open Science Lab» in Zürich, as part of the hackerspace collective Bitwäscherei. The lab can serve as a production, dissemination and research space for our collaborative project to bring the learned know-how from this programme into the DIY culture and make it more accessible to society.
With my personal background PhD in bionanotechnology and lecturer in nanotech for life science, I will both provide scientific conultancy, support as an intermediary, communicate between the tandem team, aswell as collaboratively develop the production with our temporary artist collective.
Motivation to work with Nanotechnologies - by Shih Wei Chieh
I am a self-taught media artist, material researcher, engineer. My practices often involves with new and old medias, and with very diverse groups of people from indigenous craftsman to media artists, scientists. I am interested in different properties of lights, or applications, for example, I make alternative photography with programmable UV laser exposure, dye sensitized solar cell dyed with traditional dye crafts technique; I started Tribe Against Machine project to look for the common ground for the traditional craftsmanship and modern technologies.
My interest for nanotechnology starts from the difficulties in my research process, I’ve been having the very difficulty to understand how to employ natural dye skills in dye sensitized solar cells, and the lack of knowledge to make it flexible and bio-degradable. How can I coat TiO2 nano layer on Kombucha cellulose? Not just the practical application puzzles me, but also the political circumstance, how can we establish a system that can allow artist can create workable prototype with, or without the aid of professional scientist? And sociologically, what does that mean if we can eliminate the gap to the high technology?
By the collaboration and participation with the Global Hackteria Network, I learned the importance of open science and citizen science. Furthermore, for the practical artistic part, I am particularly interested in the Soft Matter Physics group in AMI, I want to learn more about how those spiral nano structures are built into flexible TiO2 layers, how the nano structures can be modified in order to deal with optical applications, particularly the groups: “photonics structures in animal” and “plant inspired material and surfaces”.
As many of our friends of the hackteria network got involved, we had quite a nice crew going to Fribourg, including the remote collaborators being live updated online.
Matchmaking event at AMI
As our applicants to the matchmaking event were partially living in other parts of this globe, or travelling to Indonesia, we extended our team to be able to meet and present at the event hosted at AMI. Maya Minder, Urs Gaudenz and Kaspar König all went there to represent the collaborative and transdisciplinary nature of the "hackteria approach" and we all kept in the loop together through our chat group.
Online meetings with potential "Tandem"
We started to get in the loop by email with one of the researchers from AMI, René Iseli aka @easily, which then led to regular discussions and chat on the telegram group and several online meetings to think on what we can work on together, we presented our practices, discuss our lives and interests, tried to understand the research fields of René, and started to speculate about possible artistic outcomes and ideas to work on.

For the practical artistic part, I am particularly interested in the Soft Matter Physics group in AMI, I want to learn more about how those spiral nano structures are built into flexible TiO2 layers, how the nano structures can be modified in order to deal with optical applications, particularly the groups: “photonics structures in animal” and “plant inspired material and surfaces”.
I am always interested in light and all the attribute in light, including polarizing, light is both wave and particle, and what are the possibilities brought by the new technology in art, especially single photon level technology and quantum phenomenon. To me that is not just a utility tool, and also an approach or interface to conciseness science in philosophical level. How modern philosophy and conscious science is shaped by modern science, like theories made by Giulio Tononi (the IIT theory), David Chalmers, David Presiti.
Motivation (by easily)
My fascination in science has always been carried by the interchange of different disciplines. There is barely a phenomenon which can be fully understood by only looking at one scientific aspect. This lead me to study physics and biology at the University of Bern and is also the reason why I started my studies at the Adolphe Merkle Institute.
But Science is not only about understanding, a great part is about making people understand what the science is about. As science gets more complex, it makes it harder to display research in an "easy going" way. NanoArts is thus an amazing opportunity to approach this issue, and bring science in an artistic way closer to the public. As I'm also a hobby artist in a smaller scheme, I'm looking forward to learn and grow from this collaboration with the Hackteria Network in a scientific and artistic way and paving a path towards artful science.

I am mostly interested in the modalities of transdisciplinary collaboration, and will try to contribute with this, and bring a great project to our space Hackteria ZET - Open Science Lab for production.
This NanoArts collaborative process is an opportunity to put in practice some of my personal experience in transdisciplinary moderation & communication. I hope to be able to translate some of the nano-lingo within our collective project team, due to my personal research background in related fields of bionanotechnology, surface science and materials science & engineering (back in the days...1995-2007).
Additionally it's a great chance for my friend and collaborator, Abao, to work with us here in Switzerland, and learn and research more deeply into the "high-end" laboratory methods and underlying fundamental concepts with access to an established research environment for the nano sciences at AMI, and in contunious dialogue with our tandem partner, René.
I am also interested organize small retreats during the different project phases, where we can meet each other outside of the "predefined" roles and define the collaborative objectives more in more detail, during long nights of cooking & eating together, jamming and making music together and reflect on underlying philosophical concepts of our shared interests.
