DIYbio Expo 2012: Mobile Labs and Nomadic Citizen Participation in Science Posted on May 22, 2012 Attractor: Marc R. Dusseiller
old text ....
Radical initiatives and projects, such as Hackerspaces, DIYbio, Maker communities, Fablabs, all present an alternative approach to innovation and research outside of the official academia and industry walls. We want to test further the possibilities of a more nomadic and mobile model of such alternative labs and allow greater intensity of experiments and networks between various technologies and communities on the streets of Prague. We want to invite the global community of Hackerspaces, DIY, Maker communities to send us and showcase their kits and products in workshops and expo style street exhibitions where anyone can interact with the tool.
Methodology: We want to create in Prague a nomadic kitchen-science lab and look into possible future science – society interactions. We will use local hot dog and ice cream food truck or print via some Fablab a model of the Indonesia angkingan and change its functionality (by adding low tech hacked science equipment) to offer science and food (molecular gastronomy) experiments on the streets of Prague. The Do-It-Yourself (DIY) and Do-It-With-Others (DIWO) approaches in citizen science projects are embodied in the street culture, which we believe should serve as a model for public participation in science initiatives. We believe science needs to go to the streets; it needs to taste and involve people in a very visceral and embodied way in order to provide a real participation for more democratic policy model. In the mobile truck we want to showcase various kits, products and solutions from the DIY & maker communities across the world.
