This is an email to welcome you the the HackteriaLab 2011.

The lab will take place in the 12th century monastery L'Arc in Romainmotier in the Jura mountains of South West Switzerland. The lab will officially start on 28th July and end on 4th August. The public part, called 'the reflection'  will then take place in Zurich on the 6th and 7th August.

Different activities are planed for the week. There will also be time for discussions and free experimenting. We are working on the week-grid.

If you want to contribute with a micro-workshop, a sessions or a talk just let me know.

Looking forward to an amazing Hackterialab 2011.

HackteriaLab Nodes

To group some of our ideas and also arrange topics throughout the week we would like to define some nodes of shared interests.

  • Furs (rats and other animals)
  • Biosynthesis (making wine :-)
  • Tissue (growth, patterning, fungi, flesh)
  • Incubators (have you ever hear of the egyption egg-oven?)
  • Children (yeah they are real bioart projects)
  • Food (the classic... and writing recipes is fun)
  • Lab instrumentation (just made a DIY cyber oechslemeter)(to include the famous microscope, plus all the other DIY gear off the WIKI. we should try and make one of everything and document them better)
  • Kresse Shields (I just want to plug my mushrooms into an arduino)
  • Microfluidics
  • Drosophila
  • ...

ideas and discussions

Micro Manipulator

Project Idea by Urs G

Small and precise mechanical manipulator made from recycled material and using open hard and software.

Can be used for:
- Laser cutting masks or light materials using a DVD-laser-diode
- Manipulate organisms or material
- Stage for microscopy
- Tissue engineering
(yeah yeah we print some fungi :-)
- Mini extruder
- SMD pick and place / stencil cutter

Basic principle:

- Two CD / DVD drives with stepper motor mounted cross wise
- Both drives are mounted fix, one is the object carrier the other is the manipulator
- Two stepper motor drivers (ex. pololu 4988) with micro stepping
- RepRap driver-software teacup on an arduino board
- Controlled by G-Code
- G-Code may be generated with InkScape and G-Code plugin

The x-y mechanics, the driver and the control is working. Waiting for laser diodes to mount.
Would love to continue on the device in a direction useful for hackteria project.

Friendly Invitation to all participants

Dear all

This is an email to (belatedly) welcome you the the HackteriaLab 2011.

First of all, a recap on some information that you should already know. The HackteriaLab "The Retreat" will take place in the abbey of a 12th century monastery, in L'Arc in Romainmotier in the Jura mountains of South West Switzerland. The collaborative and research lab will begin on 28th July and end on 4th August. There will then be 'The Reflection' in Zurich on the 6th and 7th August with workshop for the public and performances. We are really looking forward to see all of you for this second edition of the HackteriaLab. its great to have such an inspiring group of interesting participants and the beautiful location in the Jura, (even near the Val de Travers, the true origin of traditional absinthe :-)

You should already have your travel details – if not get in touch with Pei - vul3jp6p@gmail.com

We have a WIKI on the Hackteria site for all things related to the lab. You can find it here – http://hackteria.org/wiki/index.php/HackteriaLab_2011_-_Romainmotier . We encourage you to sign up to the WIKI – partly to see more information and thoughts related to the lab and also to share your own thoughts and ideas. To sign up you need to go to the WIKI and use the username 'lab2011' and use the password 'romainmotier'. send an email to marc to get your personal login username (had to close it due to spam...)

We have various plans already for how to schedule our time, how to structure the lab (so it doesn't become a 6 day soldering free for all), and what to make sure is there. Each of you will be coming to the lab with your own ideas, your own approaches and your own tools and materials. Seeing as the idea for the lab is to share skills, knowledge and experience it would be good to know how you would all propose to contribute to it.

As you will see from the WIKI, we can either run a series of micro-workshops, or half- or full-day led sessions. We could also persue the idea of working nodes – concentrated areas for working on and sharing skills within a certain area in smaller groups; for example, microscopy, DIY lab gear, rats, micro-fluidics, etc etc.

Let us also know what materials and/or tools you plan to bring, and what materials you would like to see. We will be bringing a lot of gear but its always good to know if this can be optimised. This also applies to living matter, lab gear and electronic components.

Share your own thoughts and ideas in the following section on the wiki:

- HackteriaLab 2011 Commons - your approaches and ideas http://hackteria.org/wiki/index.php/HackteriaLab_2011_Commons

- HackteriaLab 2011 Material/Tools - things you will bring to the lab, also applies to living matter, lab gear and electronic components. and also things you would like us to order or someone else hopefully to bring: http://hackteria.org/wiki/index.php/HackteriaLab_2011_Material/Tools

It would be great if you could also make a short introduction for yourself and your ideas by sending an email reply-to all.

So, basically, lets get on to the WIKI and begin to make proper concrete plans for how we are going to make the 2011 Hackterialab perfect.

wishing you all a great time for coming here and a good trip, peace,

Marc, Andy, Yashas, Pei, Urs, Sachiko
