The Arai-eek Programme Calendar is the day-by-day schedule for Phase 2 of the Arai-eek Co-Laboratory at CoLabs Chiang Mai, running from 17 to 30 May 2026 in Chiang Mai's Old Town.

The Co-Laboratory brings together residents and additional participants for two weeks of collaborative work — workshops by visiting artists, talks, performances, and a public showcase festival in the final days. Most workshops happen at Pa Rang Cafe and Art Stay (37/1 Sinharat Road Lane 2, Chiang Mai Old Town); the opening and concert events are at Rong Sa Dang.

E011: Political Animals — Animals, Animacies, and Crisis/War

In John Berger's seminal essay "Why Look at Animals", he offers up the repressed shadow of animality, examining the relations and roles animals have outside and in parallel to their formations in industrial society, poetically phrasing them as "messengers and promises".

In this 2.5 hr discussion group, Luca — an artist, writer and researcher invested in how nonhuman agencies afflict notions of time — and Adeline — a trained geneticist, wildlife conservationist and aspiring artist — discuss conservation politics in conflict zones, and the ways animals show up in times of crisis as figures through which the social is metabolised and engineered.

Both will first introduce their practices, areas of research and major questions. At least half the session will involve a discussion component, where participants are invited to bring a story of an animal (real or otherwise, fictional figures allowed) "in conflict" with technopolitical forces.

In Luca's practice at present, she is fascinated by the historical entanglement between the animal and the machine, and looks to them both as figures that animate and parse anticipation and catastrophe.

Djampi (from the Sanskrit word japa) means prayer or medicine, traditionally made from natural ingredients such as spices, roots, tubers, bark, stems, and flowers. Each culture and community has its own unique ways, stories, and terms for using these ingredients.

In this workshop, a variety of spices and herbs will be prepared on the table. We’ll gather casually to chat, exchange knowledge and experiences, and experiment together with the many possibilities of spices and traditional ingredients.

This workshop will explore applying the cut-up technique to digital and physical media using Splinter: a custom screenshot tool made with TouchDesigner. We will play with the mythological, biological, and symbolic idea of the chimera as hybrid "creature" composed of different types of media. We will break apart and recombine media to produce surreal, surprising, and interesting new personal and creative expressions.
