“Biology Experiments for Children”
coverFor example a great book on “Biology Experiments for Children” by Ethel Hanauer, 1962. It is a very inspring collection of simple experiments to make kids explore life itself, going from plants to animals and finally the human animal. My favorites are the stuff on “OBSERVING CELLS OF THE HUMAN BODY”, “GROWING MOSSES IN YOUR TERRARIUM” or “EXAMINING EDIBLE MUSHROOMS”. According to the introduction all material that is needed except some cheap kitchen and household utensils is… quote: “For your study of living things you will need a microscope”. Yeah, that’s easy… just look at all our posts on DIY microscopy, or check the next book on cheap scientific tools…

“Low Cost Equipment for science and technology education”
simple_microscpopeWith the title “Low Cost Equipment for science and technology education” UNESCO, 1985, published this list of 84 apparatus designs to be made from simple materials. It was put together by a group of scientists, teachers and institutions from Brazil, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines and Thailand. It ranges from a simple test tube-holder made out of a pet bottle to microscopes, galvanometers, pin-hole cameras, aquariums or alcohol burners.
